Job Title: Staff Development Specialist
Department: Staff Resources
Reports To: Director of Staff Resources
Level: Specialized Staff (this is a non-management role that requires specialized skills).
Job Type: This is an unpaid volunteer role (TouhouFest is 100% volunteer run). TouhouFest staff roles require a regular / recurring commitment which may include completing work year-round or for parts of the year.
Location: All responsibilities of this role can be completed virtually and physical/in-person attendance at our event is optional.
Position Overview
At TouhouFest, many of our staff members are Touhou fans themselves. We greatly value the diversity, different perspectives, and varying personal/professional backgrounds that they bring. Alongside that, we believe that having clearly established standards and an internal way for staff to learn necessary skills/knowledge that they haven’t had the opportunity to gain elsewhere is crucial for the development of our staff team, supports our ideal to promote from within, and is an investment into each staff member’s own growth. By developing accessible, relevant, and meaningful training resources, the Staff Development Specialist helps ensure that all staff—regardless of background or experience—are equipped to contribute in a way that is ethical, professional, and aligned with our organization’s values.
We are seeking to recruit one or more Staff Development Specialists to research, develop/create, and maintain/update a collection of both optional and mandatory staff training modules. Most of these trainings will be hosted on an online platform that can be completed asynchronously. The contents of these trainings may include:
Basic principles of professionalism and general “soft skills” required in a professional environment (communication, teamwork, conflict resolution in a team environment, etc).
Internal policies/procedures, “industry standards”, and ethical best practices (related to any of the various aspects that goes into planning and managing a fan-based convention-style event and/or of running a nonprofit volunteer-based organization).
Concepts related to leadership, managing a team/organization, conflict resolution as a supervisor, boundary-setting as a supervisor, and ethical duties as a supervisor.
Anti-harassment/bullying, anti-discrimination, and anti-retaliation principles.
Concepts related to long-term/strategic planning, organizational structure/design, and management of staff/volunteer morale (including engagement and retention).
Staff Duties
Using a combination of your own existing expertise, credible research / sources, and internal organizational policies / procedures / documents:
Identify areas of need for training / staff development which may include for all staff as a whole, for staff that supervise others, and/or for upper-level management.
Draft curriculums, learning objectives, and training outlines for approval by the Director of Staff Resources.
At the direction of the Director of Staff Resources, create training contents/material in an appropriate format.
Use knowledge checks, feedback surveys, and other mechanisms of outcome measurement to track the effectiveness of implemented trainings and advise the Director of Staff Resources on any potential changes/modifications.
Be available to provide consultations and advice to the Staff Resources Director as well as other individuals in leadership roles regarding matters related to staff development.
Requirements
Possess an adequate amount of experience and/or knowledge, gained through any combination of formal education, other trainings, or any professional, volunteer, or other experiences to advise on at least one of the following:
Any one or more areas listed under the “Position Overview” section above (items A through E).
Experience with designing, creating, and/or implementing similar types of training or staff development initiatives.
Ability and willingness to work in a team (there will most likely be multiple Staff Development Specialists working as a team).
An adequate level of proficiency in English to be able to carry out all job duties (including creation of written training materials) in English.
Time commitment:
At this time, we have little to no existing training infrastructure or content. As such, during the initial development phase (beginning now and expected to last approximately 3 months), this role may require up to 20 hours of work per month.
After the initial development phase, the ongoing time commitment is expected to be approximately 5–10 hours per month, depending on active projects and organizational needs.
Preferences
Exceeding requirement #1 (having more than one area of experience/knowledge).
Professional experience in a training / staff development role is a plus.
Familiarity with Touhou Project and the Touhou community is a plus.
